Americana Music Association Releases First Half of 15th Annual AmericanaFest Bill

Americanafest

The Americana Music Association continues its tradition of showcasing some of the best in Americana and roots music by it’s partial roster of Americanfest performers released today.

Though the lineup doesn’t show any groundbreaking direction, I’m fine with that. There are lots of folks on the list that have been busting their hump for years and deserve this recognition rather then inserting acts to placate outsider accusations of one thing or another. Personally I’m happy to see Casa Twang favorites Howlin’ Brothers, Jamestown Revival, John Moreland, Lera Lynn, Marah and Ben Miller Band on the bill. And Texas is well-represented by Billy Joe Shaver, Sarah Jarosz, Jason Eady and Hayes Carll

The event is celebrating its 15th as the premier Americana event by welcoming 160 performers taking the stage at 11 venues including 3rd & Lindsley, The Basement, City Winery, High Watt, Cannery, Mercy Lounge, The Rutledge, Station Inn, Music City Roots, Downtown Presbyterian Church and Musicians Corner.

Three-time Americana Group of the Year, The Avett Brothers, will headline the event at Riverfront Parl on Saturday Sept. 20. Americana’s Music Festival & Conference registrations will have access. Tickets for the general public will go on sale Friday, June 27 at 10AMat www.ticketfly.com.

Twang Nation South-By-Southwest Americana Mix

Circumstances conspired to keep me from attending the music (and tech/film) madness that is South-By-Southwest taking place March 13-18  in  my home state of Texas. In lieu of standing toe-to-toe with strangers an having beer spilled on me I will soldier on from my couch here in the Bay Area to shed light on the Americana and Roots artists tha will be sprinkled in with the indie-darling of the week bands that dominate the scene. Here’s a list of bands/musicians that I’ve collected that are playing the event. Have a listen and check them out live. Then help them out and buy a CD or t-shirt. Guitar strings and gas don’t grown on trees bud!

The Best of 2010

It’s that time again. The end of the year list that are as common as as spam in your inbox, but it’s tradition and I’m a sucker for tradition. So here we go!

If you follow my twitter feed (http://twitter.com/#!/TwangNation) you’ll already know what’s on this list. I did the countdown as seperate tweets lest week and I got a great response. You also know that its not merely a top 10 but a top 25! That’s right, you get 25% more music for your money.

It has been another great year for Americana/roots music, and from what’s currently coming across my desk for 2011 we can look forward to another. Old-timers are beating on the barn door and upstarts are using old parts to make new works that advance the form while staying true to the roots.  The genre appears to be attracting and cultivating the type of nurturing and craftsmanship that labels used to practice in the golden days of the 60s and early 70s. Of course this time without the lavish pay-out. The music industry is in turmoil from the corner office view but from the touring van and the laptop it’s  a prime-time for opportunity. And if you’re a burgeoning musician concerned about the current conditions I urge you to purchase Dr. Ralph Stanley’s book Man of Constant Sorry and learn about what REAL hard time look like.

So I raise a pint and celebrate an embarrassment of riches that show the love of craft and and honor in roots that defines a road of American culture that is often overlooked and forgotten but often leads to the promised land.

As the year comes to a close, I’m reflecting on the past four years of writing Minkin’s Music and all the good times with people I’ve met along the way. May the spirit of the season touch your soul and let comfort and joy shine upon you throughout the upcoming year.

Music Review: Joe Pug – The Messenger (Lightning Rod Records)

Pity the young singer/songwriter. His career is always facing the relentless headwind of rarefied troubadour history and the bronze images of Those Who Came Before are evoked as an unreachable benchmark whenever his work is evaluated. His songs are picked apart at a detail that would make Trekkies and Jazz aficionados’ eyes glaze.  Yeah, screw that….

23 year-old Joe Pug (nee Joe Pugliese) abandoned his pursuit of playwright dreams at the University of North Carolina and headed to Chicago. Working as a carpenter by day and spending nights playing guitar. Literary and working class bona fides, check and check. Pug’s first long-player, The Messenger, displays the traditions with pride but courageously carves out a comfortable space, somewhere between folk word-smithing and Americana/Country Music sentiment, to shape his own style.

The opening, title cut and the following How Good You Are sounds like it would fit nicely in the SO-Cal, folk-pop of a Jackson Browne late 70’s release. Unlike the outward-looking songs of his earlier EP, The Nation of Heat, The Messenger is a survey of the inner emotional landscape.Pug is aware of his chosen career’s cultural landmines and tendency towards preciousness. His self-effacement in Not So Sure boasts “I wrote John Steinbeck’s books.” in one verse, but and then pulls the chair out with “Stealing was so easy then, I wish that it still were.” in a latter one.

The Sharpest Crown is an lovingly somber tale of ill-fated love and Unsophisticated Heart is a learned survey on the singer’s romantic naivety, and Disguised as Someone Else is a scoundre’ls rumination of incognito redemption through labor for his lost love. Both os these cuts evoke a Nick Drake-style melancholy-beauty.The folk tradition of war protest is heralded with Bury Me Far (From My Uniform,) which makes its point not my ham-bahanded moralizing but by humanizing the soldiers that die in battle. Its the aural equivalent of showing the coffins – draped in Old Glory – being unloaded from the planes.

The First Time I Saw You is a fine literary country tune. “I’ve seen my share of counterfeit, I used to have them hang around a bit, Once you seen yourself a genuine, There ain’t no going back.”

I would be remiss to mention Rocco Labriola’s delicate touch on the pedal steel throughout The Messenger.

Instead of measuring Pug by the careers of unreachable greybeards that have had decades to hone their craft to teh point that thier misteps fade into the background,  it’s more appropriate to gauge him by his contemporaries – M. Ward, AA Bondy, Josh Ritter – and he easily bests them all.

When reaching the heights of something as often precious as folk music it’s easy to come off like a pretentious hack to be met with same uncontrollable rage displayed by John Belushi to the precious crooner of “If I gave my love a cherry” in Animal House. But in a contemporary musical scene that laps up style over substance, and casts a sneering mockery of any attempt at heartfelt, it’s a wondrous and rare thing to hear a man with a guitar longing to craft songs to last long enough to become an icon.
