Steve Earle & The Dukes - So You Wannabe an Outlaw

Legendary ‘Hardcore Troubadour’ Steve Earle and the current version of his backing country rock band The Dukes – – guitarist Chris Masterson, fiddle player Eleanor Whitmore, bassist Kelly Looney, and new members drummer Brad Pemberton and pedal steel player Ricky Ray Jackson – will release ‘So You Wannabe an Outlaw’ on June 16 on Warner Bros. Records.

Musician, songwriter, actor and author Steve Earle’s first album for Warner Bros. Records since 1997’s ‘El Corazón’, explores his Texas country songwriting roots and features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, Billy Joe Shaver and Miranda Lambert.

This is not the first time Earle and Miranda Lambert have collaborated. Sort of. Lambert gave co-writer’s credit to Steve Earle after the similarities to his song “I Feel Alright” and her song ‘Kerosene’ from her debut album was raised. It’s reported that Lambert admitted to unconsciously copying the melody and structure, saying “I didn’t purposefully plagiarize his song — but unconsciously I copied it almost exactly. I guess I’d listened to it so much that I just kind of had it in there.”

“There’s nothing ‘retro’ about this record,” Earle says. “I’m just acknowledging where I’m coming from.” So You Wannabe an Outlaw is the first recording he has made in Austin, TX. Earle has lived in New York City for the past decade. “Look, I’m always gonna be a Texan, no matter what I do,” he says. “And I’m always going to be somebody who learned their craft in Nashville. It’s who I am.”

‘So You Wannabe an Outlaw’ is an homage to outlaw music and is dedicated to the late Waylon Jennings. “I was out to unapologetically ‘channel’ Waylon as best as I could.” Earle says. “This record was all about me playing’ on the back pick-up of a ’66 Fender Telecaster on an entire record for the first time in my life. The vocal part of it is a little different. I certainly don’t sound like Waylon Jennings. I moved to Nashville in November of 1974, and right after that Willie Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger came out. I was around when Waylon was recording Dreaming My Dreams. Guitar Town (Earle’s 1986 chart-topping, Grammy Award-winning debut album) wound up being kind of my version of those types of songs,” Earle recalls.

The album was produced by Richard Bennett and recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin.

Earle hasn’t always embraced his alt.country past preferring to guide his career into more of a folk direction. “….Outlaw” appears to be a return to form. Is this a crass attempt to cash in on the resurgence of classic country spearheaded by the success of Chris Stapleton and early Sturgill Simpson? Who cares? Easrlevwas a pivotal figure in laying the groundwork that allowed those artists to build a career. I, for one, say welcome home!

This summer, Earle will lead his fourth annual songwriting intensive, Camp Copperhead, in upstate New York from June 26-30, 2017. The all-inclusive, four-day music vacation and fully immersive learning experience will take place at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY, about half an hour west of Woodstock. Nikki Lane Performs "Jackpot" on Conan

Last night Nikki Lane treated the Conan O’Brien audience to a rousing rendition of her cut “Jackpot.” Bedecked in her spectacular Nudie suit finest Lane leads her crackerjack band through the jumped-up shuffle clearly leaving the audience wanting more.

Lane graced the same stage just over a month backing up the Old 97s on their song “Good With God.” The album cut of the song originally featured Brandi Carlile.

Lane is staying busy as she will also make an appearance on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” this Friday, April 28th. Additionally, this week’s CBS This Morning Saturday airing will feature Lane and her band performing two tracks from Highway Queen at Loretta Lynn’s historic home in Hurricane Mills (Check Local Listings). Loretta Lynn joins Lane for a very special duet of her 1966 hit song “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On Your Mind),” of which Lynn has recorded a new version for her upcoming album ‘Wouldn’t It Be Great.

Lane will also perform at this year’s Stagecoach Festival on Saturday, April 29th.

Lillie Mae made her solo national television debut last night on the Conan O’Brien show. She and her band, featuring her brother on guitar and sister on backup vocals, tear through a spirited version of “Over The Hill And Through The Woods.”

Mae also took the time to record a separate a stripped down performance of “To Go Wrong.”

Loretta Lynn to Release New Album ‘Wouldn’t It Be Great’ on August 18

Loretta Lynn to Release New Studio Album, Wouldn't It Be Great,

The latest volume of Cash Cabin Sessions, recordings is going to be one by a country music legend.

Loretta Lynn will celebrate her 85th birthday not only by playing two sold-out shows in the hallowed halls of Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on April 14th, but by also releasing ‘Wouldn’t It Be Great’ a few months later on Friday, August 18. This latest Cash Cabin Sessions release is produced by Patsy Lynn Russell and John Carter Cash at Johnny Cash’s Cash Cabin in Hendersonville, Tenn.

‘Wouldn’t It Be Great’ will premiere new compositions like “Ruby’s Stool,” “Ain’t No Time to Go” and “I’m Dying for Someone to Live For” and will revisit classics “God Makes No Mistakes,” “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)” that have been written or co-written by Lynn.

“I think you try to do better with every record you put out, It’s just everyday living—and everybody wants to know, ‘Well, what is it about your songs that people like?’ I think you’ve got to tell your stories. I just think it hits everybody, you know, the songs.” Loretta said of the record and her songwriting approach.

Record Store Day 2017 – Americana and Roots Music Picks

It’s that time of year again. Well, yes Spring but more specifically for a music blog it’s the annual season of blossoming limit selections of rare and obscure vinyl known as Record Store Day. The event has helped fuel the resurgence in sales and pushing the few remaining pressing plant’s production capacity to the hilt. As is tradition the event will be taking place on the fourth Saturday in April. For 2017 that means Saturday, April 22nd.

Record Store Day offerings are scarce, unique releases, some only available in specific regions. Some are produced in very limited runs, some totaling no more than a few hundred total.

Jason Isbell Announces new album, ‘The Nashville Sound’ – Out June 16th

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, guitarist Jason Isbell and his mighty band, the 400 Unit, have announced the June 16th release of their highly anticipated new album, The Nashville Sound (Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers). The Nashville Sound is the follow up to 2015’s critically acclaimed Something More Than Free, which won two Grammy Awards (Best Americana Album & Best American Roots Song, “24 Frames”) and two Americana Music Association Awards (Album of the Year & Song of The Year, “24 Frames”). Over his career, Jason Isbell has become one the most respected and celebrated songwriters of his generation. He possesses an incredible penchant for identifying and articulating some of the deepest, yet simplest, human emotions, and turning them into beautiful poetry through song.

‘The Nashville Sound’ features 10 new songs that address a range of real life subject matters that include politics and cultural privilege (“White Man’s World”), longing nostalgia (“The Last Of My Kind”), love and mortality (“If We Were Vampires”), the toxic effect of today’s pressures (“Anxiety”), the remnants of a break up (“Chaos and Clothes”) and finding hope (“Something To Love”). Songs such as “Cumberland Gap” and “Hope The Highroad” find Isbell and his bandmates going back to their rock roots full force.

The Nashville Sound was recorded at Nashville’s legendary RCA Studio A and produced by Grammy Award-winner Dave Cobb, who produced Something More Than Free and Isbell’s celebrated 2013 breakthrough album Southeastern. The Nashville Sound is the first official Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit album since 2011’s Here We Rest. The 400 Unit features Derry deBorja (keyboards), Chad Gamble (drums), Jimbo Hart (bass), Amanda Shires (fiddle) and Sadler Vaden (guitar). Justin Townes Earle To Release ‘Kids In The Street’ May 26

Though they’ve had a rocky history, on his latest album Justin Townes Earle has ended up at the same label of his father, Steve Earle. ‘Kids in the Street’ is Earle’s  finale in the emotionally self-reflective trilogy ‘Single Mothers’ (2014) and ‘Absent Fathers’ (2015). ‘Kids…’  is a 12-song work that is produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit) at Mogis’ Nebraska ARC Studios. This is the first time in his career that Earle has worked with an outside producer.

Now a decade into his recording career and embracing sobriety, marriage, and impending fatherhood, Earle is enthusiastically looking to the future. “Life has changed a lot for me in the last few years,” Earle reflects. “I got married and am getting ready to become a father, and this is the first record that I’ve written since I’ve been married. 

There’s definitely an uplifting aspect to this record in a lot of ways, because I’m feeling pretty positive.” He continues, “When I wrote songs in the past, I was looking in on what I was feeling, but this record’s more about looking outward on what’s happening, and writing about subjects like gentrification and inner city strife. This record also has more of a soul influence to it, and it’s got a deeper connection to the blues than anything I’ve done before.”

Several of the songs on ‘Kids On The Street’ reference the lower-middle-class Nashville neighborhoods of Earle’s youth, which in recent years some say have lost their character to the creeping scourge of gentrification. Significantly, the album is the first of Earle’s not recorded in Nashville. “It’s the first time that I’ve worked outside of my usual umbrella of people to make a record,” Earle explains, adding “In Nashville, if you have the right connections, it’ll spoil the shit out of you, because you’ve got access to the best musicians in the world and the best studios in the world. If you had told me when I started making records, that I wasn’t gonna make every record in Nashville, I would have told you you were crazy. And if you’d told me that I’d end up making a record in Omaha, I’d tell you you were out of your freaking mind.”

New West Records President John Allen stated about Earle’s signing to the label, “When I first met a young Justin Townes Earle, it was evident then he was intent on following his own artistic path. As his publisher, I saw his songwriting evolve to a literary depth and swagger that maintained that unique vision. New West is very proud to release Justin’s next album of his best work yet.”

Justin Townes Earle will take to the road this Spring with his longtime guitarist Paul Niehaus alongside The Sadies as his backing band (they will also support each show). The full band tour will kick off with Earle’s appearance at this years Stagecoach Festival in Indio, CA on April 28th. Prior to the full band performances, Earle will perform a solo March residency at the Doug Fir Lounge located in his new home of Portland, OR as well as two solo, acoustic shows in Georgia. Lindi Ortega To Release New EP

Dark Americana chanteuse Lindi Ortega will release ‘Til The Goin’ Gets Gone’ an EP of four songs, three originals and a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Waiting ‘Round To Die” on March 17.

In her downtime last year she rediscovered an intimacy she had neglected. As the lyric video for the title cut demonstrates there’s a sparse, atmospheric production with an emphasis on Ortega’s singular soprano that draws you into the musician’s roadworn dark and lonely universe.

About the rest of the release the release says…

“What a Girl’s Gotta Do,” a song that is the silver lining of an otherwise dreadful date, explores the gritty pragmatism of making ends meet. Alongside the title track, this song offers a second metaphor about artistic life that strengthens the EP’s overall sense of resolve. Ortega’s somber rendition of “Waiting ‘Round to Die,” acknowledges a personal debt – her recent discovery of the legendary songwriter’s music is what finally cured her writer’s block. The closer, “Final Bow,” came when Ortega assumed she only had one song left in her. “I thought I had to quit music but I wanted to leave gracefully,” she says. “But then I decided to get up and sing some more.” As a whole, this statement captures the essence of Ortega’s new EP – it’s about dusting off, gutting it out, and getting up for another round.’

John Moreland : New Album 'Big Bad Luv',

Few people embody the genuine soul of Americana and roots music than Tulsa, Oklahoma’s John Moreland. A new album from this unassuming poet of the human landscape is always a cause for celebration. On May 5th Moreland will release his fourth album, entitled ‘Big Bad Luv’ on England’s 4Ad label- an em print better known for alert rock like the Cocteau Twins and the Wolfgang Press, or post-rock noisemakers like The Throwing Muses and The Pixies. Though the label does have some folk and alt.country Cree signing band’s like The Red House Painters, The Mountain Goats and Tarnation. The one thing 4AD is consistent with is the quality their artists display in their craft.

This is just what they get with John Moreland, an artist that sits solitary on stage and pulls a silenced audience along his stories of unflinching emotion. The album is being described as ‘…an honest, bruising experience. A record about love, faith and the human condition..” Sounds like a John Moreland album to me.

Big Bad Luv, was recorded in Little Rock, AK, and mostly with a crew of Moreland’s Tulsa friends: John Calvin Abney (piano and guitar), Aaron Boehler (bass), Paddy Ryan (drums), Jared Tyler (dobro) and Lucero’s Rick Steff (piano). Coming together in three sessions over ten months, which were sandwiched between touring dates and life, the final album was then mixed by GRAMMY winning Tchad Blake, who has worked with iconic acts from Al Green to Tom Waits.

If the track from the album below, ‘It Don’t Suit Me (Like Before)’, is any indication of the tone of the album there seems to be a stylistic and thematic move away from the shadows. This walk on the sunny side might be due in large part to his marriage last Summer.

Angaleena Presley - 'Wrangled'

On April 21 honky-tonk songstress, and one-third of the country super-group Pistol Annies, Angaleena Presley will release her sophomore solo album ‘Wrangled’ April 21 on Mining Light/Thirty Tigers records.

‘Wrangled’ ‘s the 12-track has Presley once again at the co-production helm with Oran Thornton (Eric Church, David Nail) and was recording at famed “Ronnie’s Place” in Nashville.

There’s also an impressive list of co-writers on ‘Wrangled.’

From the press release:

One of the album’s many highlights is “Cheer Up Little Darling” — which Angaleena co-wrote with her dear friend Guy Clark. This is the last song completed by Guy before his death and features Shawn Camp playing Guy’s No. 10 guitar, which was used to write the song with Guy, and Guy’s mandola, which he had been learning to play during the last year of his life.

Another spotlight track is “Dreams Don’t Come True,” written with Pistol Annie sisters, Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe.

“Only Blood” was written with fellow East Kentuckian, Chris Stapleton and features Morgane Stapleton’s unmistakable vocals, while “Good Girl Down” yielded unforgettable moments with the legendary Wanda Jackson.

Of ‘Wrangled’ Presley says:

“Wrangled is an explicitly forthright journey through my experience in the business of Country Music. I tried to tackle uncomfortable realities like the discrimination against female artists at the height of Bro-Country, the high school mentality of Music Row and the pain that’s just beneath the surface of the road to stardom,” says Angaleena.

“Covered in elbow grease and sacrifice, I set out to shed the skin of my ‘dream’ Nashville by painting a musical picture of loss, surrender, resurrection, redemption, and connection with real people who make and support honest music.”

Angaleena will debut many of these new songs on the road, including during the Cayamo Cruise, Feb. 19-26, and will announce tour dates for the Spring and Summer in coming weeks.
