Watch Out! Steve Martin and Edie Brickell: “Love Has Come For You”

I grew up outside of Dallas and used to head to Deep Ellum on the weekend to see the local bands, like the New Bohemians, play Theater Gallery. Prophet Bar and Club Clearview. later I got to know some members of the band wand was able to see them perform with Bob Dylan and Don Henley. There was even an overnight stay in the Norman OK jail as part of the adventure (long story, buy me a beer sometime and I’ll tell you)

I was proud of our little, local band doing well.

Well band split, Brickell moved to New York City and did some solo work. Oh, and she married some musician names Paul Simon.

When i heard that Brickell would be rording with Steve Martin i had a feeling it was going to be cool. Martin might be a jester but his banjo playing is dead serious and steeped in tradition which he’s proven with his Grammy-nominated work with the Steep Canyon Rangers.

Love Has Come for You, will be released on April 23rd through Rounder Records. 13 new songs that allow Martin’s excellent banjo work to inspire Brickell’s lyrics and vocals. Below you the two talk about working on the album and you get to sample some of the tunes. All in a setting echoing the album’s cover.

The collaboration began when Martin sent Brickell “a tune with no song to it”: “I was so thrilled that you kept sending tunes because they would arrive and there were little stories in them just immediately for me,” she says. “I saw a lot of images and all I had to do was sit back and narrate what I saw.” The two also discuss the album’s double-entendre title, working with producer and beloved British musician Peter Asherand how the LP sounds more like a string quartet rather than a bluegrass album. “My own agent called me up, and he said I hope this doesn’t insult you but this is the best thing you’ve ever done.'”

Martin and Bickell continue to prove my view that all the cool kids are coming to Americana music.

Remember back when I said that Delta Rae kind of reminded me of Fleetwood Mac? Well the band made me a genius by recently teaming up with Lindsey Buckingham, singer/songwriter.guitarist of Fleetwood Mac, who played guitar on the re-recorded version of their new single, If I Loved You.

Vocalist Elizabeth Hopkins reaches soulful, Adele-like heights in her soulful performance of this song of love lost.

Listen Up! Patty Griffin “Ohio”

Patty Griffin has released the first song, Ohio, from her upcoming new record, American Kid. (New West Records)

Griffin wrote the song with additional music arrangement, which has heavy Indian influences, by Band of Joy partner Robert Plant, who also sings harmonies on the track. Other performers are Luther and Cody Dickinson from North Mississippi Allstars on guitar and drums respectively with Doug Lancio and co-producer Craig Ross on guitars and percussion.

American Kid will be released on May 7. The album, co-produced by Griffin and Ross, is her seventh and first for New West. It is her first album of mainly new material since 2007’s Children Running. In between then and now, she made the Grammy Award-winning Downtown Church in 2010 and worked on an album and toured for the Band of Joy alongside Plant.

Griffin debuted American Kid. in a former church in Austin for an invitation-only audience at South-By-Southwest.

Watch Out – Lindi Ortega: “Murder Of Crows”

Lindi Ortega - Murder of CrowsMurder of crows is the answer to a classic trivia question, “What are a group of crows called?”

It’s also an excellent song by Canadian roots-rocker Lindi Ortega, from her recent TN 2012 Top Pick Cigarettes & Truckstops

A contemporary take on the classic murder ballad (there needs to be more of those) positioning a female protagonist as the culprit, the video is washed in a striking black and white gauze as Ortega appears armed, with a shovel and donning Día de Muertos skull make-up. Subtle it ain’t.

Ortega’s striking trill pleads for mercy, but claims no remorse, as she confesses murder of a man. Though we never find out what he did to deserve his untimely demise, like the woman abuser in the Dixie Chicks Goodbye Earl, we are asked to assume he undoubtedly deserved it. The sound is a reverb-soaked, noir-roots vibe reminiscent of Furnace Room Lullaby era Neko Case.

I first heard Murder Of Crows oduring Ortega;s own cameo on ABC’S Music Row melodrama Nashville. Like her hero, Dolly Parton, Ortega is delivering great songs like this via contemporary formats to a wider audience.

Murder has rarely sounded so good.

Michelle Shocked , Natalie Maines and the Risk of Expression

shockedLast week folk-singer Michelle Shocked made good on her surname by treating a o a San Francisco crowd to a rambling anti-gay screed. “You are going to leave here and tell people ‘Michelle Shocked said God hates faggots,'” Shocked declared causing the fans to boo and stream out. The venue’s employees saw what was transpiring and decided to stop the gig by cutting the sound and lights.

This event happened almost 10 years to the day that Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines took to a London stage to protest the invasion of Iraq by stating ” Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.” before performing the Bruce Robison-penned, beautifully subtle anti-war song, “Travelin’ Soldier,”

To my ears these are two sides of the same career-limiting coin. Looking your career demographic straight in the eye and spitting in it.

Both Shocked and Maines later tried to distance herself from their remarks. Maines releases the statement “As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect.”

And Shocked backpedaled thusly “To those fans who are disappointed by what they’ve heard or think I said, I’m very sorry,” Shocked wrote. “I don’t always express myself as clearly as I should … I’d like to say this was a publicity stunt, but I’m really not that clever, and I’m definitely not that cynical.”

But the damage was done.

Maines, and sisters Emily Robison Martie Maguire, faced fans publicly destroying their CDs, country radio boycotts and even death threats. In response the band released 2007’s Taking the Long Way, their weakest album in my opinion, and were rewarded by winning Grammy awards in all of the five categories they were nominated in including Album of the Year and Best Country Album, though it was their lest country influenced album. Taking the Long Way became that year’s favorite album of people that likely had never previously counted themselves as Dixie Chicks fans.

Shocked is currently seeing her tour upended with 11 of her remaining scheduled dates have reportedly called off by promoters, including an appearance at the Telluride Bluegrass festival. Her website still shows a calendar of European appearances, but most of these are described as “tentative” and at least one, Germany’s Burg Herzberg festival, has dropped her from the bill. There has also been calls of boycott and speculation about her mental health from people that once called themselves her fans. Whether people from the other side of the political spectrum champion her case remains to be seen, but Shocked has a much lower celebrity profile then the Dixie Chicks, and less of a chance to make cultural hay, so the odds are not promising.

Performer’s bread and butter is expression. Some may be more contrived than others but the while point of a musician. singer is to give voice to feelings. Why are we surprised when those feelings don’t mirror our expectations of them?

i am no angel in this. When Ryan Adams or Neko Case move from country and roots based music to pursue a different genre muse i bid them good luck but don’t cover them here. The name Twang Nation says it all. This is not exclusively an Adams or Case fan sight. i am not obligated to fall in love with their very utterances. When Steve Earle decided to trade his dusty boots in for A Greenwich Village soap box it wasn’t his advocacy I was opposed to. It was that it his new-found enlightenment was rendering his once eloquent allegories stiff and tedious. My bigotry is one I believe all cultural bloggers should posses, one of style not ideology.

So what goes through the mind of a performer when they purposely alienate their base? Do they feel their fans are so loyal that they can says and do anything? Are the feelings too much for them to hold on to and later distill into a narrative with a 3 chord progression? I have no idea, I’ve never been that performer’s shoes.

But as a fan of music i look around at all the contrived, manufactured for consumption crap we are barraged with every day and applause the occasional heartfelt opinion, whether it mirrors my own ideology or not. Maines, Shocked, Earle , Tom Morello, Ted Nugent, or Bale Shelton rephrasing a Shania Twain song. into some kind of homophobic slur. ..none of them I feel is my ideological kin. Maybe that’s why all the hoopla confuses me. I have no litmus of ideological purity i am holding them acceptable to. Just don’t make shitty music.

Musicians are entitled to have contradictory, and half- baked opinions, as do the rest of us in the old USA. And I believe that’s where the outrage lies. We don’t see them as us. We make them into more and set them on a pedestal and allow their gift to transcend them something more then flesh and bone.

Then when they pull an Icarus and plummet to earth we’re pissed. Not only at them, but at our naivety.

After all, we’re only human.

It’s events like these that make me appreciate this line from Evelyn Beatrice when she tried to encapsulate the ideal of the French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher Voltaire
“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

I would add “… no matter how stupid it is.” I would then add a chorus and play it in the key of G.

From 1926 to 1930 one of the most popular rural string bands on record was Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers. Through their 78 RPM discs and their various performances, Charlie Poole was second only to Gid Tanner and His Skillet Lickers. Poole’s uniquely syncopated three finger banjo picking style coupled with his Piedmont vocal inflections eventually colored and defined much of what we consider “old-time” music. The classic configuration of banjo, fiddle and guitar with vocals was encouraged by the main label that promoted Poole but he also wanted to record instrumentals featuring twin-fiddle and piano. As renaming his group The Highlanders, Poole was able to actualize this musical vision. This collection contains all of the sides that Poole made with Roy Harvey, Lucy Terry, and twin-fiddlers Lonnie Austin & Odell Smith. Remastered in beautiful sound by Christopher King and with notes written by old-time musician and scholar Kinney Rorrer.

GhostBros_cover_5x5_rgbI haven’t seen the Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the collaboration by horror author Stephen King and , roots-rocker John Mellencamp and Americana godfather and singer/songwriter T Bone Burnett, but if the soundtrack gives us any insight into the Southern Gothic musical it’s going to be a killer.(heh)

I already posted an Elvis Costello cut from album. Now we have a sweet cut from Neko Case. A femme fatale reels off a long list of libido-fueled plays over a shuffle. I’m willing to go out on a limb and say that Neko’s character is not one of the good guys.

It’s been years since I’ve heard this country music tinged sound from Neko and I am a fan. What do you think? Leave it in the comments below.

Jason Isbell to Release New Solo Album, “Southeastern” June 11

Jason Isbell will release Southeastern on June 11 via Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers. This will be his second solo album since 2007’s debut Sirens of the Ditch released shortly after his split from the Drive-By Truckers. Southeastern contains 12 new Isbell compositions and reportedly has “some of the most personal songs of self-reflection and discovery he has written to date.”

Southeastern is a more personal release from Isbell as he deals with new beginnings, like the recent marriage to Amanda Shires and his now yearlong sobriety, without being mawkish pr getting on a soapbox.

The album will offer a duets with Amanda shires Traveling Alone and Stockholm with Kim Richey and will feature 400 Unit members Derry deBorja (keyboards) and Chad Gamble (drums.) The album was produced by Dave Cobb (Jamey Johnson, The Secret Sisters).

Amy Black is a personal friend and favorite here at Casa Twang, She’s a fantastic singer/songwriter with a sound that harkens back to country music’s soulful golden age and a smart and savvy self-promoter.

Black was named by Alternate Route as one of the top 30 Female vocalists and her local paper The Boston Globe described her latest album, “One Time” as “Americana in its broadest definition. It’s rooted in folk and country but with tinges of Southern soul and blues.” Oh yes, she’s all that and more.

Listen Up! Shovels and Rope Cover Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits for Jack White’s Third Man Records

Shovels and Rope Johnny 99It looks like Jack White;s adopted home of Nashville is starting to reflect in the music being released by his Third Man Records label.

The latest is from Charleston indie-folk duo Shovels and Rope. The 7-inch will be released on April 2nd and features a jaunty cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Johnny 99” (off the extraordinary Nebraska, hear it below) on the A side, with a version of Tom Waits’ “Bad As Me” on the B.

The release is on on Third Man’s Blue Series, where singers and bands traveling through Nashville are invited to stop by to record one or two songs at Third Man Studio produced by White. The songs are then, as soon as possible, made available on 7” vinyl and digitally on itunes.
