News Round Up: Fogerty Twangs, Dave Rawlings Readies Release

The Wall Street Journal talks to roots rocker John Fogerty (John Fogerty Twangs Again) about the dissolution of his old band Creedence Clearwater Revival, the role country music played in shaping his sound, and his new release The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again.

The 9513.com finds good things in the tough love of Miranda Lambert’s Revolution.

Gillian Welch’s longtime musical counterpart steps into the spotlight with The Dave Rawlings Machine new album, A Friend of a Friend, to be released on Nov. 17th. Welch appears 8 of the 9 tracks on the album. Rawlings plans to tour to support the album, with Southeast and Midwest dates in late November and December and a West Coast run in 2010. The touring lineup will feature Welch and three members of Old Crow Medicine Show — fiddler Ketch Secor, guitarist Willie Watson and bassist Morgan Jahnig. (billboard.com)

News Round Up: George Jones & Tammy Wynette

  • The Possum will be all over the place this month in support of his exclusive new release with Cracker Barrel A Collection Of My Best Recollection. George Jones is set to appear on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman on Wednesday, September 9th, and on Friday, September 11th will perform on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. A live interview and performance on the Fox News Huckabee show is slated for Saturday, September 12th. Jones also has scheduled interviews for CBS affiliates, Fox Entertainment and Sirius/XM Radio.
  • Jones’ singing partner, ex-wife and the “First Lady of Country Music” Tammy Wynette is to be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. She will be inducted alongside writers Kye Fleming and Mark D Sanders. (BBC)

News Round Up: Allison Moorer Heads Back to Nashville

  • Country Rapper, Colt Ford,tweeted (twittered?) that he “… sat down today with DMC from the Iconic Group RUN-DMC. We are gonna do a song together. He is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Wow.” I hope Colt Ford can do for country/rap what RUN-DMC and Aerosmith did for rock/rap…oh wait. (Twang Nation review of Colt Ford’s  Ride Through the Country)
  • I’m a fan of Alabama native Allison Moorer (AKA sister of Shelby Lynne and better-half #6 for Texas legend Steve Earle as well as his opening act if you’ve been to any of his shows the last few years) and her earlier, more country flavored work. Moorer makes the song A Soft Place to Fall, off 1998’s Alabama Song a transcendental experience. The news that Moorer is coming back to Nashville at the end of the year to make a new album with producer R.S. Field is great news! Earle, how about you?
  • Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood returning as co-hosts of the Country Music Association Awards in Nashville this fall is not news. Call me when Caitlin Rose and Mojo Nixon are on the bill.

Willie Nelson Premieres New Video for Shoeshine Man

  • Willie Nelson premiered his new video covering Tom T. Hall’s Shoeshine Man (below) The song is not on his upcoming covers album American Classics so I have no idea whay he made this video, but he seems to be having a ball. The Texas Yoda has taken a page from the DIY codger goofing around in front of a video camera recently used by Neil Young for his video Fork in the Road.
  • The Americana Music Association announced the lineup for its 2009 festival,  Sept. 16-19 at around several of  Nashville’s best venues – The Mercy Lounge, The Cannery Ballroom, 3rd & Lindsley, The Station Inn and The Basement.  On the roster is Cross Canadian Ragweed, Angela Easterling, Asleep at the Wheel, The Bottle Rockets, Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller, Joe Pug, Charlie Robison, Marty Stuart, Patrick Sweany, Those Darlins and many more.
  • Popmatters.com has posted an mp3 for Chain, a cut off Vic Chesnutt’s upcoming release At the Cut (Constellation) to be released 22 September (US)
  • Randy Travis, Martina McBride and Ray Price join an International  line-up of over 60 International, UK and Irish acts performing on three separate stages at the UTV CountryFest ’09  August 1st – 2nd  at the Kings Hall in Belfast.

Band Roundup – Ruby Jane

Just when you needed more evidence that you’re getting old and aren’t accomplished very much I give you Ruby Jane.  Ruby is a 14 year old native Texan (born in Dallas, now resides in Austin) and is a premiere junior fiddler and a fast-rising star in country and bluegrass-Americana music scene.

She has shared the stage with Marty Stuart, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Asleep at the Wheel, Rhonda Vincent, Mike Snider, Jesse McReynolds, Jim Brock, James Monroe, Carl Jackson and Big & Rich (hey, a girls gotta make some bank!) In true old-school country entrepreneurial style  Ruby even has her own pancake mix for sale!  When not sawing wood and hawking flapjacks Ruby Jane is also an actress and a model Kids today and their virtuoso Blugrass playing!

Band Round-Up: The Builders and the Butchers

Portland, Oregon by way of  “hey! There’s Russia!” Alaska The Builders and the Butchers play a burgeoning fringe style of Southern Gothic music reflected in bands like vets Those Legendary Shack Shakers, newcomers  O’Death and Hank Williams III favorites Those Poor Bastards. Imagine O Brother where Art Though as performed by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds or Iggy and the Stooges and you won’t be far off.

This aesthetic is a favorite of mine and I think a natural progression of people’s, not just kid’s, demand for authenticity and passion in music. Kids reared on punk, metal and hip-hop reach back into their own heritage come up with music that feels real and reflects the outsider status of all these genre’s early practitioners as well as their passionate and unhinged performance style. Great stuff!

Elvis Costello on David Letterman

Anyone catch Elvis Costello on David Letterman last night? He played the title cut from his new Americana album Secret, Profane & Sugarcane Costello was joined onstage by Americana legend Jim Lauderdale.

This isn’t the performance (I will post it when I find it) but it is Letterman from ’96 and pretty sweet rendition of Emmylou and Gram Parsons’ Love Hurts.

Amy LaVere on MTV’s $5 Cover

MTV has new unveiled a show called $5 Cover, which takes a look at the different artists in the underground music scene in Nashville Memphis. One standout  is Amy LaVere, a doghouse bass plucking chanteuse that reminiscent of a rootsy Amie Winehouse, without the substance abuse or unfortunate dating scenarios.
