Wanted! – Notable Americana and Roots Music Releases for 2019

2018 is now in the pages of history and as America shifts (lurches?) into an uncertain future. Americana and roots music, unlike many other genres, continues to be true to its legacy and addresses our times with art that refuses to chase the charts and churn out reflexively commercial product and, lucky for us, refuses to treat the audience as mindless consumers.

That’s not to say that Americana and roots music is merely a barometer for political and social conditions and change. No sane person wants their favorite artists to be righteous yet starve. As the music industry continues to reflect changing consumer demands artists are also finding opportunities to reach audiences and generate revenue in movies and video games.

Some albums I’m  personally looking forward to because I’ve heard some cuts, or on my faith in the artist,  are Hayes Carll’s  â€œWhat It Is,” Feb. 15: Dale Watson’s Call Me Lucky and Ryan Bingham – “American Love Song” , all on February 15th,  Mandolin Orange’s “Tides of a Teardrop” on February 1st, and Joshua Ray Walker’s “Wish You Were Here” on January 25th as well as Son Volt’s “Union’ on March 29th.

As more dates come throughout the year I will be updating the list. If you know of an actual release not listed yet please leave it in the comments.

Americana Music Association Announces Showcase Line-up

ama final_480x476

Building on the already excellent initial lineup announcement the Nashville-based Americana Music Association has released has released the full roster of artists performing during the event.

Some of the additions that stand out to me are roots-rockers Shooter Jennings and Austin Lucas, alt.country stalwarts Bottle Rockets and Ashley Monroe who apparently has no problem working both the Americana and Music Row sides of the fence (good!) One performer I’m bummed to see missing from the roster is Jason Isbell (Though his talented better half, Amanda Shires, is on the list.) There might be scheduling conflicts with his current tour supporting the excellent “Southeastern.”

The vagueness of Americana’s boundaries allows a richness and diversity within a shared source and vision. it’s what legend, and scheduled performer, Darrell Scott describes positively as a “hard-to-define place.”

the selections show a broad range of diversity and excellence the of the genre. Great to see many Casa Twang favorites represented as well.

The AMA has created a Spotify playlist of the performers on the 2013 bill.

The 14th annual event will take place in Nashville, Sept. 18-22. I’ll be there. hope you are too!

Watch Out! Amy Speace- “The Sea and the Shore” (featuring John Fullbright) [VIDEO]

John Fullbright, Amy Speace

Below if the video for Amy Speace’s new music video for “The Sea & The Shore,” featuring a duet with John Fullbright. Speace and and co-wrtiter Robby Hecht’s lyrics narrate the story of a failing relationship, acted out by two marionettes courtesy of the Nashville Puppet Theater. The song can be found on Speace’s forthcoming How To Sleep In A Stormy Boat (April 16.)

“I will forever be grateful to my good friend John Fullbright for braving the 15 degree weather with me on that spring morning in Nashville near Radnor Lake, the closest we could get to the sea on an indie budget,” says Speace. “Also, I was so happy to discover the Nashville Puppet Theater in putting together this video. Once we found the blue-eyed puppet we knew we had our leading man.” (from GRAMMY.com)

Speace landed in New York City after college to pursue a life in theater. She studied acting at The National Shakespeare Conservatory, toured the US with the National Shakespeare Company, started her own theater company to direct and produce the plays she had written, and in the midst of her early 20’s, picked up a pawn shop guitar, wrote her first songs, and found herself with steady gigs at such storied venues as The Bitter End and The Living Room.

A self-described ‘late bloomer’ to songwriting she’s been quietly but steadily been making waves in the Americana/folk world for a few years now, and in the journey, gaining support from the likes of Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Guy Clark and other icons in the songwriting community.

Speace recorded How To Sleep In A Stormy Boat in Nashville with producer Neilson Hubbard. The album’s 11 songs reflects themes of lost love throughout, with Speace drawing inspiration from the classic works of William Shakespeare. In addition to Fullbright, special guests include singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier and cellist Ben Sollee. The project was funded via a extraordinarily successful Kickstarter campaign.

Speace is currently in the midst of a U.S. tour, with dates scheduled through September.

You can hear Speace duet with Mary Gauthier on the song “The Fortunate Ones” from How To Sleep in a Stormy Boat on my latest podcast.
