KHYI 100th Episode Contest – Wynonna & The Big Noise

Wynonna & The Big Noise

Seems like only yesterday I was introduced to the KHYI morning DJ Chuck Taylor at the 18th annual Texas Music Revolution at South Fork Ranch. Soon after he and general station manager Joshua Jones asked to do a casual morning segment featuring a song of my choice as well as live shows I’d recommend. Oh and happenings at this little blog and on my sundry social media.

Coming up on our 100th episode of our little segment, Twang Nation Radio, and I am here to tell you it’s been a great ride. We’ve celebrated extraordinary music, solemn moments for passing legends and celebrated the miracle that is Nashville hot chicken.

Chuck has become not just an associate and parter in sonic escapades but a friend. I’m in awe of his tireless commitment to sharing great music and making KHYI the preeminent roots music stations in North Texas, In short, he kicks ass.

Enough of the weepy bits and on to the swag!

Leave a memory of Twang Nation Radio, performers you’ve discovered, concerts you’ve found out about, times you wanted to punch me for bad-mouthing Sturgill Simpson, for a chance to win the latest awesome release from Wynonna & The Big Noise. Signed and on vinyl no less. REALLY!

One winner will be picked at random Sunday, April 24th, Wednesday, April 27th 2pm CST. THIS CONTEST IS INTENDED FOR LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE 50 UNITED STATES AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ONLY.

GhostTunes Contest

GhostTunes

The headlines are full of performers not happy with the current market conditions for their music. Few have the will (or the clout) to build their own marketplace to take on the establishment.

Garth Brooks has used his massive comeback, releasing ‘Man Against Machine, his first album in 13 years along with a string of sold-out shows, to shine a light on these economic conditions and his own full-service music platform , which goes live today.

From the press release “GhostTunes focuses on providing the best music experience for both artists and the fans that love their music. Fans are able to listen to their music immediately upon purchase from the GhostTunes platform, without having to download the content to their device. Fans can also download their purchased content to play with the audio player of their choice on a phone, tablet or computer.”

Will this change things? Perhaps. For now it’s changed the conversation.

Leave a comment below for chance to win a $12.99 gift card and judge for yourself.

A winner will be chosen at random this evening at 7pm CST.

Good luck!

Secret Sisters Ticket Giveaway – War Memorial Auditorium/Nashville

If you live in, or are visiting, Nashville early next month you might want to set aside some time to see Secret Sisters play the beautiful War Memorial Auditorium on Sept. 6th. if you want a chance to win two tickets to that event just leave a comment below on what you like about the Secret Sisters. A post will be chosen at random on Friday 8/17 12PM PST. Be sure to leave an email address so I can contact the lucky winner.

I’m assuming the Sisters will be performing songs from their upcoming Brandi Carlile produced second release, which is scheduled for a fall 2012 release.

The first time I saw the Muscle Shoals, Alabama’s Secret Sisters ( Laura Rogers Lydia Rogers) was at a GRAMMY event for the Recording Academy Producers & Engineers honoring T Bone Burnett. Burnett’s then recent protégés had just released their self-titled debut album which featured him at the production helm. The Secret Sisters opened the event and I saw what he saw in the performers. Jaded industry folks stopped hobnobbing and stood entranced by the delicate harmony and winning personalities. I was a fan.

The duo recently released a 7 inch with Jack White at Third Man Records and also played White and and Karen Elson’s divorce party. (apparently this was only a rumor) The Sisters also had their song “Tomorrow Will Be Kinder”, inspired by the Alabama tornado outbreak, featured on the T Bone produced soundtrack for The Hunger Games.

Here’s “Black And Blue,” a new song from the The Secret Sister’s upcoming album live from the stage at Wakarusa

Railroad Revival Tour Ticket Giveaway

As part of my own Twang Nation train redemption series we bring you an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to a Railroad Revival Tour show at a stop of your choice.

Railroad Revival Tour is celebrates a pivotal age of American transportation and the more recent musical spirit best exemplified by the Festival Express. That tour chartered a Canadian National Railways train to transport Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, The Band, Buddy Guy and others to Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary, during the summer of 1970. The Railroad Revival Tour is a truly a uniques experience as travels town to towns aboard 16 vintage, 1940’s railcars, setting up open air, pop-up concert venues in parks, fields and lots around the railroad tracks where they stop.

Last year’s inaugural journey, featuring Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show, was a huge success and 2012’s version, featuring Willie Nelson & Family, Band of Horses, Jamey Johnson and John Reilly & Friends, is shaping up to be even bigger and better!

This year’s train route kicks off at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia surrounded by the historical steam locomotives and railcars of years past. The train then heads to Memphis, home of the legendary Stax Records and Elvis (and BBQ!.) Returning to the tour’s (and my) home state of Texas, the train will stop in the historical railroad town of Old Town Spring before heading west to Tempe, San Pedro and a finale where it began last year in Oakland, CA.

Now how do you enter the contest? Easy! Head over to the Twang Nation Facebook page and enter a caption for this pic. Rules: Post your caption on the image and the one with the most “Likes” at 1 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday August 1st will be claimed the Winner. Twang Nation reserves the right to settle a tie.
Make sure to “Share” the Facebook post with friends and family to increase your “Likes”.

Delta Rae News and Contest

North Carolina’s Delta Rae is a excellent new addition to a growing pop-folk field of performers that are almost single-handedly bringing the Americana music genre into the mainstream.  They join their contemporaries The Civil Wars, Mumford and Sons, the Avett Brothers and others embodying a branch of the Americana family tree that is attracting a significant number of fans that wouldn’t typically give twang and roots a listen. While these bands share the music on a larger stage, and bring more people into the genre tent, the soul remains intact.

Header over to my twitter page and for a chance to win a copy of their debut “Carry The Fire” and ook for a review of the album on Twang Nation soon. In the meantime you can stream the entire album over at Rolling Stone. The band has also been busy participating recently in Billboard’s “Under Cover” program by covering Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” as well as playing their single, “Bottom Of The River.”

Delta Rae will also be in LA on Tuesday celebrating the release of their album with a sold out show at the Troubadour. They’ll also be performing at the GRAMMY Museum in LA on Monday, June 18th as part of an event with Seymour Stein. They are also currently on tour and, if that wasn’t enough the band will also be performing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno June 25th.

A larger stage indeed
