Listen Up! Waylon Jennings – Songbird (2025)

Even though Waylon Jennings’ latest posthumous release ‘Songbird’ spans 1973 to 1984, his voice is vivid and raw throughout. Shooter Jennings resists temptation to “smooth over” imperfections, allowing his grit and phrasing to shine. Shooter Jennings and engineer Nate Haessly leaned analog, mixing on vintage gear to preserve an organic feel. The occasional overdubs come from surviving members of The Waylors and guest vocalists, but it’s generally restrained and respectful to the original tapes.

Compiled and mixed by Shooter Jennings at Hollywood, CA’s hallowed Sunset Sound Studio 3, Songbird collects recordings produced in various studios by Waylon Jennings and his longtime drummer and co-producer Richie Albright, featuring members of his indelible backing band, The Waylors, including Albright and renowned pedal steel guitarist Ralph Mooney, along with such special guests as Tony Joe White, Jessi Colter, and more. Jennings’ reinterpretation of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird” is a standout. It imbues the gentle original with honky-tonk steel, strong back-beat, and an emotional delivery. The addition of Elizabeth Cook and Ashley Monroe on backing vocals gives it a delicate lift without crowding out Jennings’ growl.

Listen Up – Caroline Spence’s *Heart Go Wild’ (2025)

*Heart Go Wild* is Spence’s fifth studio album, released August 29, 2025. It arrives after *True North* (2022), a record that leaned into vulnerability and emotional introspection. Since then, Spence has entered several new life phases: marriage, motherhood, and a period of creative recalibration. She describes ‘Heart Go Wild’ as giving herself “permission … to stay vulnerable and unfiltered … to stay in that wildness.the co-produced the album alongside Mark Campbell and Peter Groenwald, and the record is structured with 12 tracks.

Given Spence’s consistent track record for lyrical clarity and emotional candor, expectations were high: could she deepen her voice while also expanding her sonic palette? In many ways, *Heart Go Wild* succeeds.

One of Spence’s stronge’ leaned more toward introspection and quiet landscapes, ‘Heart Go Wild’ invites more movement — musically and thematically. Yet Spence never abandons what feels essential to her: clear melodies, expressive vocals, and lyric-driven storytelling.

“Effortless” (is a stand-out. The lyric is about “not settling” and trusting timing — a theme that seems to echo Spence’s artistic journey. The melody is graceful, the instrumentation supportive rather than showy, and the overall posture is one of quiet confidence. The album benefits from production that rarely gets in the way of the songs. Campbell, Groenwald, and Spence are careful to not over-embellish; arrangements often allow space for voice and lyric. In a few places, textures step in (strings, subtle percussion, atmospheric touches), but never in a way that distracts. The production feels like it serves the emotional arc of the record. The tracklist shows Spence working in multiple shades: from more immediate or mid-tempo songs to quiet ballads. She avoids monotony by varying pacing, instrumentation, and vocal dynamics. The title track “Heart Go Wild,” “Confront It,” and more playful songs like “Fun at Parties” offer contrast.

Standout Tracks

* “Soft Animal” — Echoes the more delicate side of Spence’s writing, offering vulnerability wrapped in subtle musical texture.

*Heart Go Wild* is a mature, earnest, and quietly ambitious record. It doesn’t aim for bombast — instead, it leans into gentler evolution. For longtime fans, it feels like a natural next step, deepening rather than veering off course. For newcomers, it offers a compelling entry into Spence’s world: singer-songwriter grounded in emotion, with a voice that holds both fragility and resolve.

It may not always surprise you, but it will stay with you — in the spaces between the lines and the breath before her voice returns. And that feels exactly what Spence intended.

Great Lake Swimmers ‘Return with Caught Light’ — Out October 10, 2025

Few bands capture the quiet beauty of the Canadian landscape like Great Lake Swimmers. Led by songwriter Tony Dekker, the Southern Ontario indie-folk collective has built a reputation over two decades for crafting music that feels both timeless and deeply rooted in place. With their signature blend of acoustic instruments, rural soundscapes, and wistful vocals, the band first gained attention in the early 2000s with a run of atmospheric records often recorded in unusual, resonant spaces — from old grain silos to country churches.

That sense of pastoral intimacy has carried through their career, with live performances often described as homespun yet lush, a kind of Americana by way of the Canadian wilds.

Now, Great Lake Swimmers are entering a new chapter with their upcoming album, Caught Light, due out October 10, 2025. Recorded in just five days in Ontario’s Ganaraska Forest, the album finds Dekker and his collaborators leaning into a more direct and instinctive sound. Working alongside producer Darcy Yates (Bahamas) and engineer Jimmy Bowskill (Blue Rodeo), the group tapped into the immediacy and warmth of early ’70s folk-pop, while retaining the reflective spirit that has long defined their music.

If their earlier albums were shaped by reverberating walls and sacred stillness, Caught Light feels alive with motion and breath — a snapshot of a band reconnecting with instinct and intuition. For long-time fans, it promises both familiarity and surprise: the atmospheric textures are still there, but Dekker’s songwriting carries a newfound spontaneity, a sense of being fully present in the moment.

Son Volt Continue To Inspire And Challenge On Electro Melodier Set For Summer Release

It’s been a couple of years since Alt.country stalwarts Son Volt last release, Union and Jay Farrar and company have not been idle in these pandemic times. Their tenth studio album will be released July 30th and will feature Son Volt’s current lineup of Mark Spencer, Chris Fame, Mark Patterson and Andrew DuPlantis..

The title, Electro Melodier, is taken from the names of two vintage amplifiers from the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, and will feature more intimate and socio-political musings from Farrar, who originally set out to make a nostalgic record that paid tribute to the music of his youth.

“I wanted to concentrate on the melodies which got me into music in the first place,” Farrar said in a statement. “I wanted politics to take a back seat this time, but it always seems to find a way back in there.”

The first cut from Electro Melodier is “Reverie,” (below) a song of hope and sepia memories laced with organ swells and chiming guitar.

The follow-up to 2019’s acclaimed release Union, Electro Melodier finds band founder Jay Farrar’s unparalleled songwriting as poignant and intelligent as ever. Electro Melodier touches on the thought-provoking issues that impact us all, including the pandemic, love, and the inevitable passing of time. Farrar started Son Volt in 1994 after leaving the seminal group Uncle Tupelo, whose No Depression album helped define the alt-country and Americana genre. Son Volt’s debut Trace was heavily lauded and remains a defining document of the ’90s alt-country movement. Two decades later, the group continue to decidedly capture the times while breaking new musical ground on Electro Melodier.

Whenever the topic of great bands you’ve probably never heard of comes up The Felice Brothers have to be near the top of ant roots music list. For 15 years the upstate New York band has delivered their
brand of DIY ramshackle roots music to adoring fans over 16 albums and delivering dynamic live performances that feel more like a tent revival than a rock show.

The band’s last release, “Undress” was in the pandemic halcyon days of 2019 and now thy’ve released a new single “Inferno.” The title is from the the third of Tom Hanks’ Dan Brown films 2016 film. The song continues like a kaleidoscopic memories of pop culture – Fight Club, Claude Van Damm, Kurt Cobain – all filtered in the bands sepia bittersweet melody.

Ian Felice.says concerning the song “This song, more than anything, is about the persistence of certain mundane memories, and how they take on hidden meaning and significance, how their symbols become part of our inner lives, and how they are transformed in our minds, “It’s also about youth and growth and transformation. Memories of the film are obscured through the lens of time. Does Jean Claude Van Damm actually ride a motorcycle along the banks of the Rio Grande? I don’t recall, but still I have this image in my mind. I just remember how horrible the movie was. The two characters in the song are transformed into swans in the final verse, in a dream, as they are swept into the fire of another, more frightening reality.”

“Inferno” is the first single of the band’s untitled album to be released later this year. It was produced by The Felice Brothers, engineered by James Felice and Nate Wood, and mixed by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Phoebe Bridgers). The song also sees the continuation of the new lineup of the band that debuted with Undress, consisting of Ian Felice, who shares songwriting and vocal duties in the band with his brother James Felice, bassist Jesske Hume (Conor Oberst, Jade Bird) and drummer Will Lawrence.

In the mid-‘70s, filmmaker James Szalapski traveled to Texas’ Hill Country and Tennessee to capture musical white lightening in a bottle. From high school gymnasiums, trailer homes, recording studios to a liquor-fueled Christmas guitar pull in Guy and Susanna Clarks dining room, now legendary performers – Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Young, David Allan Coe, a 19-year-old Steve Earle and many others are shown crafting a genre by looking towards country music’s folk roots and away from Music Row’s glitz.

Musical highlights include Clark’s brilliant “Desperados Waiting For A Train,” Steve Earle’s stirring “Mercenary Song” and Townes Van Zandt’s gut-wrenching “Waiting Around To Die.” (see videos below)

Though filmed in the late 70’s the full documentary was not released theatrically until 1981 and has been notoriously difficult to watch in its entirety. If you’ve never seen it in its entirety now you’ll have a chance. Starting Feb 5 Heartworn Highways will be in Virtual Cinemas nationwide via Kino Marquee.

Most of 2020 to right now live music is largely put on hold, but plenty of artists are still finding ways to create. Time off the road and spent at home has meant hardship. but it’s also meant creative ways artists delivered performances to you at home and also time to reflect, write and record new music, which in turn means that fans can expect new albums from some of their favorite country, Americana, bluegrass and folk artists in 2021.

Despite 2020 being the worst year in most of our lifetime some great music still released to take a bit of the edge off.

2021 starts off right with releases from Steve Earle honoring the passing of Justin Townes Earle. We can also look forward to new releases from Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Langhorne Slim, Lucero, Aaron Lee Tasjan and many more.

Despite all the damage the pandemic has caused the music industry if you’re a record collector there is a silver lining. Vinyl sales surpassed CD sales for the first time in 34 years!

This is due in no small part to the efforts of the the good folks at Record Store Dy who have brought collectors limited edition new, classic and long out-of-print slabs of wax for the past 12 years.

The newest addition is RSD Black Friday. The event will take place on Black Friday (The day after Thanksgiving, November 27th) and, though a smaller selection than RSD proper (though it is closer to a 2020 version, the RSD drop) there’s still some good selections for the on your nice list to be had by John Prine, Luther Dickinson, The Drive-By Truckers, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings ,and, my personal favorite , a live Uncle Tupelo from 1994!

In the winter of 2016, Luther Dickinson began touring behind the release of his latest record, Blues & Ballads: A Folksingers Songbook Vols 1 & 2. Normaltown Hall, a now extinct listening room that sat above the New West Records office in Athens, GA, was known for hosting community events and intimate concerts intended for the listener and performer to connect. The venue capacity was permitted for 115 listeners, but on the night of March 9, 2016 there might have been over 200 people stuffed into the venue. Luther Dickinson (guitar, vocals), Sharde Thomas (drums, fife, vocals), Will Sexton (guitar), Amy LaVere (upright bass) and Brandon Chornes (drums) got on stage and brought down the house that night with a very intimate and eclectic set of American music.

New West Records is proud to release this once in a lifetime performance on super limited blue sky vinyl.

On July 13, 2006 the Drive-By Truckers set up shop at Plan 9 Records in Richmond, VA. It was the 25th Anniversary of the store. The band performed to a packed house and played a blistering set of fan-favorites featuring the songs, “18 Wheels of Love”, “Let There Be Rock”, “Goddamn Lonely Love” and “Daddy’s Cup.” The performance was also set up to benefit the Bryan and Kathryn Harvey Family Memorial Endowment. The foundation provides, among other things, music scholarships in the Richmond area. Lead vocalist and songwriter, Patterson Hood ended up writing the song “Two Daughters and A Beautiful Wife” about Bryan Harvey and his family.

This RSD Black Friday 3 LP set will be pressed on black 140g vinyl and it will be packaged in a “bootleg” style wide-spine jacket featuring a a reprint of the ticket and show poster made for the event. The jackets will be numbered according to the worldwide pressing run of 6000.

Author Stephen King described Ft. Worth native James McMurtry as “the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation” in Entertainment Weekly. The son of acclaimed author Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment), James grew up on a steady diet of Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff records. 2005’s Childish Things garnered some of the highest critical praise of McMurtry’s career and spent six weeks at number one on R&R’s Americana Music Radio Chart in 2005 and 2006. Hear Steve Earle Pay Tribute to Justin Townes Earle

On his forthcoming album, “J.T.”, Steve Earle & The Dukes pay tribute to Steve’s late son, Justin Townes Earle (J.T.), who passed away on August 20, 2020 in Nashville. The album will be released digitally on what would have been Justin’s 39th birthday, January 4, 2021, CD and vinyl formats will release March 19, 2021.

The first track, “Harlem River Blues” is available below and on your favorite streaming platforms today. The poignant song is one of Justin’s best-known compositions and took Song of the Year honors at the 2011 Americana Music Awards ceremony following Justin’s win in the Emerging Artist of the Year category in 2009.

100% of the artist advances and royalties from J.T. will be donated to a trust for Etta St. James Earle, the three-year-old daughter of Justin and Jenn Earle. While somber in parts, the album is ultimately a rousing celebration of a life lived with passion and purpose.

William Elliott Whitmore New Album Coming This Fall

Long-time roots-revivalist William Elliott Whitmore is set to release his eighth studio full-length album ‘I’m With You’ on October 16. ‘I’m With You.’ on Bloodshot Records. This will be his first release of original material since 2015’s ‘Radium Death.’

The first single “My Mind Can Be Cruel to Me,” the video is below

Whitmore said of “My Mind Can Be Cruel to Me:”
“The song “My Mind is Cruel to Me” is about perception. Our memories and thoughts can be torturous at times. Mark Twain called it the “devil’s race track”, when a line of thought and worry goes around and around in a circle inside our brains. Is the mind a separate entity from the body? At what point does it feel as though our brains are actually betraying us?”

“Human beings are a complicated animal, and with that comes complicated emotions, fears, and habits. This video is meant to show that. Are the other band members real or not? It’s hard to remember, but I swear they were breathing and talking when we filmed it. The bass player, my friend Wolfina, kept messing up takes. I’m pretty sure I’m recalling that correctly. The guitar player, Patsy Decline, was trying to mimic the pedal steel part on her semi-hollow body electric. She did a great job I thought, really captured the spirit. I’ll never forget the time we had, it’s good to be around friends.”

Sounds like just the song for these socially isolated times.
