Legacy Recordings Readies Willie Box Set / #1s Compiliation

Billboard.com reports that Legacy Recordings will celebrate Willie Nelson‘s 75th birthday (April 30) by rolling out a series of special projects. The first is the April 1 release “One Hell of a Ride,” a four-disc, 100-song boxed set.

The set bundles together music from Nelson’s stints with numerous record labels, beginning with tracks recorded in late 1954/early 1955 for KBOP radio in Pleasanton, Texas.

While the track list is still coming together, look for early 1960s takes on “Night Life,” “Funny How Time Slips Away” and “Crazy” plus iconic covers like Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin’,” Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust” and Fred Rose’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.”

Liner notes were penned by Joe Nick Patoski, whose Nelson biography, “An Epic Life,” will hit bookstores this spring via Little, Brown.

Meanwhile, on April 29, Legacy will issue “#1s,” a single-disc compilation of Nelson’s chart-topping pop and country hits.

And of course Nelson’s new studio album, the Kenny Chesney and Buddy Cannon co-produced “Moment of Forever,” is due Jan. 29 via Lost Highway.

Look for Willie on the road until the end of time.

Gone Stupid

Two things I hate is reality TV that doesn’t involve bounty-hunting and trucks driving on ice and and musicians from other genres that think Country Music is some slum where they can make some easy money on the gullible fan base. Needless to say, I hate CMT’s “Gone Country.”

Of course I haven’t seen the program yet since it premiers tonight and I’m not high enough on the media food chain to warrant a preview, but I’ll chance it. the show features Carnie Wilson, Maureen “Marcia Brady” McCormick, Twisted Sister front man Dee Snider , Sisqo of “Thong Song” fame, Julio Iglesias Jr., “American Idol” runner-up Diana DeGarmo and Boston bad boy Bobby Brown. That’s right THAT Bobby Brown.

In spite of Carnie Wilson’s lineage to brilliance and Julio Iglesias Jr.’s tie to Willie via his daddy, there’s not a serious contender in the sordid bunch. What we have is The Surreal Life- Nashville Bound!

The producers are banking on the difference with these cohabiting “celebrities” which is that beyond simply extending their faded fame for at least seven episodes, the one that can endure the most public humiliation will cut a single produced by host John Rich of Big and Rich, the Nashville comedy duo that have sold jillions of units and gives this team of competitors hope.

I mean, if Big and Rich can do it why can’t Sisqo?

These people have about as much chance as being legit country musicians as Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie have in being farm hands.

Bon Jovi, Jewel, Jessica Simpson and Beyoncé are all stiffing around the Nashville salt lick for easy money and fans that they and their management must think are fools with tons of soon-to-be-parted money.

As a passionate fan of the country genre to which this blog attests, I suggest the celebrities try rap. Yes, you too Sisqo.

Hank III Does ebay

So what would Shelton Hank Williams sell on ebay? Well the king of hellbillys/betties from time to time sells Hank III swag, memorabilia and self created artwork like the current 60’s era horned saw that he has painted in his Southern-Gothic meets Death-Metal aesthetic. The piece is whimsically entitled “R. III P.” (III for Hank III, get it?), the current bid is $275.00 (it sold for $738.99) with two more days to go. Happy bidding, Dixie-demons!

Chris Neal’s Mix List – “Woman Enough: 20 Reasons to Take the “O” Out of Country“

I’m taking a tip from the fine folks at the 9513 and calling attention to Chris Neal’s playlist,  using a play on the tile of Shooter Jennings first release,  “Woman Enough: 20 Reasons to Take the “O” Out of Country“, which was inspired by the gender inequity at country radio. There’s some great music represented, no matter he-made or she-made.

Hank Williams lyrics sell for $145,000

New York City’ – Christie’s November 30 sale of rock and pop memorabilia at totaled $864,938 and was sold 95 percent by value and 87 percent by lot. The top lot was Hank Williams’ notebook of 13 lyrics, which posted a world auction record for a Hank Williams manuscript at $145,000.The 18-page composition notebook is creased down the middle, most likely because Williams carried it in his back pocket for handy use to jot down songs when the mood struck him.

Tom T. Hall in the New York Times

That bastion of Eastern elitism, the New York Times, features another great interview with country music legend and master story teller Tom T. Hall entitled “Who Needs Country Radio? Not Tom T. Hall.” Hall talks about the state of country music industry, he and his wife – Miss. Dixie’s – song writing collaberation and his recent involvement with bluegrass music.

A great quote on the queasiness of today’s pop-country consumer.

“There’s not much call for dead-people songs in today’s suburbanized country music, but bluegrass audiences still love to hear about murderous outlaws, suicidal lovers and family ghosts. It’s the ghost of a dead mother who dials the phone in “The Midnight Call,” luring her estranged son down to a railroad depot that had been torn down years before. The Halls wrote the song for Ralph Stanley after he revitalized his career by singing “O Death” in the 2000 movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”

Ray Wylie Hubbard on Redneck Mother

Ray Wylie Hubbard is one of my country music heroes and he’s one funny son of a bitch! Here Hubbard tells about the inspiration behind his classic song “Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother”. This was filmed at Jerry Jeff Walker’s Birthday Bash at the Paramount Theater in Downtown Austin Texas. You can see Jerry Jeff laughing behind him. Classic!
