Happy Birthday Townes Van Zandt

townesThe first time I heard the name Townes Van Zandt my Uncle Tony mentioned playing a gig with him at a private party on the Tohajiilee Indian Reservationa in New Mexico. He described how he would watch him from the side of the stage and captivate them with his lyricism and picking style cribbed from fellow Texas Lightin’ Hopkins and charm them with his wit. he also described drinking so many Bloody Mary’s with Townes at an airport bar that they missed their flight out of there.

in many ways Townes Van Zadnt and Gram Parsons were brothers of the faith. Both men where born to families of means and walked away from an easy life of leisure to forge an uneasy path toward their musical vision. Greatness was attained but, like Icarus, the beckoning sun of substance abuse and the open road took them both too soon leaving a legacy felt to this day.

One of my favorite Townes stories is when he met Bob Dylan. Dylan was reportedly a “big fan” of Townes and claimed to have all of his records; Van Zandt admired Dylan’s songs, but didn’t care for his celebrity. The two first met during a chance encounter outside a costume shop in the South Congress district of Austin, Texas, on June 21, 1986. According to Johnny Guess, Dylan later arranged another meeting with the songwriter. 6th street in Austin was shut down due to Dylan being in town; Van Zandt drove his motor home to the cordoned-off area, after which Dylan boarded the vehicle and requested to hear him play several songs. During this time Townes reportedly turned down a songwriting invitation by Dylan.

I’m sure Townes is looking down and wondering what all the damn fuss is about. Bless him.

Watch Out – Red Molly: “Hello Goodbye” [VIDEO]

Red-Molly

First off, no this is not the Beatles tune. NYC-based Folk/Bluegrass/Americana music trio Red Molly‘s original is a jaunty tune playing on the ups and downs of relationships. The tune offers cracker jack musicianship and crystal-stream harmonies beautifully performed by members Laurie MacAllister (bass), Abbie Gardner (dobro, banjo) and Molly Venter (guitar).

Abbie wrote “Hello Goodbye” with her father Herb Gardner, a swing jazz and stride pianist and dixieland trombonist who has played with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Eldridge, Henry “Red” Allen, Jimmy Rushing, and Doc Cheatham.

The video was shot at the Cape Cod Carousel Funhouse Arcade. A fitting place for a song abut love I think.

The band has scored #3 on Folk DJ’s Top Album list of 2012 with Light in the Sky, and reached #10 on the Americana Music Association’s Top 40 radio chart. They’ve appeared on NPR’s Mountain Stage, MerleFest, RockyGrass, and about 100 other venues per year since their start in in 2004. In 2013, they’ll head to Australia for four major music festivals, and are booked to perform at Denmark’s Tønder Festival. (See full schedule below)

The name Red Molly is taken from a character in the Richard Thompson song “1952 Vincent Black Lightning.”

Watch Out – The Wild Feathers: “The Ceiling” and “Backwoods Company”[VIDEO]

wild feathersSometimes hype is deserved. Nashville by way of Austin band The Wild Feathers have been all over my Facebook feed for the last few weeks and for that reason I’ve avoided them like a friend s request from Blake Shelton. Then people I respect started to “like ” them. I folded and gave ’em a listen. I’m glade I did.

Ricky Young, Joel King, Taylor Burns and Preston Wimberly fuse their influences –
Petty, Dylan, Cash, The Band, Allman Bros, Neil Young and Willie Nelson – into a taunt and furious sound. This has been galvanized by a heavy touring scheduled that has landed them alongside Delta Spirit, Surfer Blood and The Heavy, and even an opening spot on Paul Simon’s 2011 fall tour.

the videos, both directed by Gus Black, prove the broad range of the band. “Backwoods Company” proves the band’s live heat and offers a menacing Southern outlaw theme reminiscent of early Drive-By Truckers.

“The Ceiling” has a mellower, front-porch ramble that swells into a Mumford & Sons-style song-a-long chorus tailor made for audience participation.

If they stay consistent the The Wild Feathers could be Americana and roots music’s next breakout band. We’ll know more when their Interscope comes out later this year.

SXSW goers check out the band at the Nikon Warner Sound Showcase at SXSW on March 14.

Happy Texas Independence Day Y’all!

guitar case front open2No my native state of Texas hasn’t seceded from the rest of the U.S (yet!)

Texas Independence Day celebrates the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836 officially breaking from Mexico to create the Republic of Texas.

That independent spirit is nowhere better proven then in the music and musicians that come from, or are drawn to, the Lone Star State. Here are a few of my favorite Texas roots and Americana artists.

Listen Up! Exclusive Track Release – Bow Thayer – “Eden”

Bow Thayer EdenIt says something special about an artist when the legendary Levon Helm plays drums on your previous recordings and you’ve been asked to Helm’s famous Midnight Rambles in Woodstock, NY, 6 different times.

Bow Thayer is that artist. The Vermont singer/songwriter new album ‘Eden’ will be released on March 5, and is co-produced/engineered by 3-time Grammy winner Justin Guip.

Eden, the album, was written almost entirely on electric banjo, and the title song certainly harkens back to the rootsy groove of The Band. The rest of the album further explores Americana and bluegrass, soul and rock territory.

EdenÂ’ is ThayerÂ’s first album of new material since the release of ‘2010 ‘s Bottom of the Sky.

Listen up: Hiss Golden Messenger: “Sufferer (Love My Conqueror)”

ATOZ_12in_TIPON

Much of of the bands in the freak folk field leaves me cold. Hiss Golden Messenger is an exception to that arbitrary and subjective rule. The vehicle for North Carolina based singer/songwriter, and former front man of Court & Spark, Michael “M.C.” Taylor stands out not only in musicianship but in excellent, sharp song-craft.

the first track from Haw, titled “Sufferer (Love My Conquerer)” contains the obtuse spiritual symbolism you’ve come to expect from HGM, over a soulful, slinky groove. There are even psychedelic elements that tend to grate on me used to nice effect on this cut.

The cut the first track from the forthcoming album Haw. The album takes its name from a small tributary of Cape Fear and is composed of 11 songs written by Taylor.

Haw is available for pre-order at paradiseofbachelors.com
