RIP Poodie Locke

May 6th 2009 in Americana, In memoriam, Legends, Texas

I was reading Twitter today and noticed “RIP Poodie” coming up from some of the people I follow. Then I went to the authority of all things Willie Nelson, stillis stillmoving.com,  and discovered what I had feared- Willie’s longtime stage manager and friend Poodie Locke died today at his home in Texas. RIP Poodie…

I wrote this song in memory of Poodie:

That Very Sad Sixth Day Of May (At Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse)

I’d hitchhiked to Poodie’s to play
For a fun Wednesday night open mic
At Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse on the sixth day of May
Was where I’d heard the news that he’d died

That was such a very sad time
With the look in Brooks’ eyes which were glazed
I think that he’d wanted to cry
A quiet moment of remembrance we paid

CHORUS:
On that very sad sixth day of May
A quiet moment of remembrance we paid
At the place where there’s no bad days
On that very sad sixth day of May

Bridge:
At the place where there’s no bad days
Nobody knew exactly what to say
Me, I just hitchhiked away
On that very sad sixth day of May

CHORUS

I think all those Stetson’s have gone to Bob Dylan’s head (badda boom!) In the current issue of Rolling Stone Bob Dylan, a Minnesotan, says that President George Bush, a Connecticutian…er born in Connecticut, bestowed on him the title of “Honorary Texan.” From the article:

“I think you really have to be a Texan to appreciate the vastness of it and the emptiness of it,” Dylan says. “But I’m an honorary Texan.”

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“Well,” he says, “George Bush, [...]

Austin360.com has a nice story on the recently deceased Poodie Locke, Willie Nelson’s stage manager of 34 years. There is also a nice tribute video on YouTube.

Jay Bennett, a former Wilco member, is suing band leader Jeff Tweedy in Cook County Circuit Court, claiming Tweedy owes him money from the band’s 2002 documentary and royalties on songs written during Bennett’s seven years with the group.
