Some artists make albums. Kaitlin Butts stages shows.
On 2024’s Roadrunner! the Tulsa native built a record around Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! With Hello, Honky Tonk, out October 30 on Republic Records, she swaps the prairie for the dance floor and takes her cue from the film version of Chicago. Picture Roxie Hart dreaming up her own revue, then drop it into a smoky Texas beer joint. As Butts puts it, “With every song, I saw a character in a honky tonk.”
That concept could have been a gimmick. In her hands it’s a gift. Every track is a little vignette with a person at its center, and Butts slips into each one with the ease of someone who’s spent years working rooms like Billy Bob’s and Luckenbach. There’s even a nod to Disney’s Country Bear Jamboree, her first brush with country music as a kid, right down to the cover art.
The singles tell you how wide the range runs. “Never Really Mine” is a chorus about confidence and letting go, the kind of song that sneaks up on you on the third listen. “I Wanna Be Bad,” co-written with Natalie Hemby, is the flip side: a dependable woman cutting loose under neon with tequila in hand. Put them side by side and you get the whole Kaitlin Butts experience, tender one minute and raising hell the next, with that big, unmistakable voice holding it all together.
This is her first full-length since signing with Republic in October 2025, and the worry with any jump to a major is that the edges get sanded off. Not here. Hello, Honky Tonk is as theatrical, as traditional and as gloriously weird as anything she made independently. It just plays on a bigger stage now.
