Some partnerships just fit, and Theo Lawrence and Phil Hollie have earned theirs. The two have been writing and singing together for years. Hollie shares writing credits on several tracks on Lawrence’s 2023 record Pickin’ & Singin’, and they released a duet, “Why Do You Still Love Me,” back in 2022. “Are You Dreaming of Me” sounds like what that history adds up to: two voices that know exactly where the other one is going.
Lawrence has always been a throwback in the best sense. His style draws on 1950s and ’60s country, soul, rockabilly, and pop, and his croon gets compared to Charlie Rich and Ray Price. Here that warmth is matched by Hollie, a Fort Worth singer who brings Texas honky-tonk grit, so the duet has both sweetness and backbone. The title alone tells you what you’re in for: a question of longing asked by two people, the kind of song that sounds made for a slow dance on a wooden floor at closing time.
What makes it work is restraint. Neither singer oversells it. The harmonies do the emotional lifting, and the song is happy to sit in its classic-country frame without winking at the past or dressing it up. It sounds less like nostalgia and more like the tradition still breathing.
This comes during a big stretch for Lawrence, who has made his national television and Grand Ole Opry debuts while touring with Alison Krauss & Union Station. If “Are You Dreaming of Me” is any sign, the Lawrence–Hollie partnership deserves a wider audience. It’s a timeless-sounding heartbreaker, and an easy one to put on repeat.
