News Round-Up: Robert Earl Keen Is Ready For Confetti

  • On August 30th, Lost Highway will release Ready For Confetti, the new, and 16th overall, studio album from renowned Texas singer/songwriter Robert Earl Keen. Ready For Confetti was produced by Lloyd Maines (Dixie Chicks, Flatlanders), who also produced Keen’s critically acclaimed 2009 album The Rose Hotel (Lost Highway).

  • The amazing Elizabeth Cook continues her never-ending tour supporting Welder and the fine folks over at Sirius XM are cutting her a break and letting her sleep in a little later by moving her popular radio show “Apron Strings” to 10 am – 2 pm eastern time. Cook says, “I feel like I’m abandoning an old lover, leaving my early birds. But it is my sincerest wishes that with the 10-2 show, “Apron Strings” fans will find new ways to sneak and listen, and having more sleep, I will sneeze less on air.” Beginning on Wednesday, May 4, the Sirius XM Outlaw Country channel will move to channel 60 on both Sirius and XM radios, and Elizabeth Cook and her “Apron Strings” show will now be heard from 10 am to 2 pm ET, Monday through Friday. News Round Up: Jimmie Dale Gilmore Premiers Heirloom Music

  • Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass fans take note! Texas’ Americana music legend  Jimmie Dale Gilmore waxes philosophic on what is wrong with country music today. Gilmore’s upcoming release was done with Hardly Strictly Bluegrass benefactor Warren Hellman, and his band the Wronglers. The album is a collection of vintage Nashville classics entitled Heirloom Music, which they’ll be premiering at Slim’s in San Francisco on Sunday3/10/11  afternoon.
  • On March 17 “Americana @ The Bluebird Cafe” show will focus on the rock side of Americana, with performances from Webb Wilder, Brad Jones and Hans Rotenberry. Tickets for the 9 p.m. show are $20, available through bluebirdcafe.com beginning at 8 a.m. on March 10, and all proceeds will go to the Americana Music Association. Also planned for this month are two more “Americana @ The Bluebird Cafe” shows: Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer will perform on March 22, and there’ll be a Jerry Douglas & Friends concert March 24th.
  • In support of his latest solo effort, the T Bone Burnett produced Low Country Blues, Gregg Allman has announced a solo tour that will launch April 19th in North Charleston, SC. For the first handful of dates, Allman will be joined by the Steve Miller Band. Allman will also be performing at several festivals this summer, including Bonnaroo and Nateva Music Festival. Press for Allman also indicates that he’ll be “back doing shows in late summer into the fall” as well.

News Round Up: T Bone Burnett Produced Steve Earle Album Forthcoming

  • I was on the fence about seeing the upcoming Gwyneth Paltrow movie Country Strong but after reading that Hayes Carll was tapped for some of the music (SFGate) for the soundtrack I might have to know. Or at least listen to the soundtrack…(btw, Happy Birthday to Hayes Carll!) UPDATE – Neal Casal (Ryan Adams and the Cardinals) is also in Country Strong. The Americana mojo is strong in such a Music City flick.
  • T Bone Burnett produced the Steve Earle song “This City, ” which plays during the closing credits tune for HBO’s Treme, a drama set in the Treme district of New Orleans which in which Earle plays the character of Harley, a local folk musician who is forming a Cajun band to back him on a tour. The song will appear on Earle’s upcoming album which will be also be produced Burnett, and has been described by Earle as his “most country album to date.”
  • This video was sent to me and when I saw it the singer looked and sounded familiar to me. Then it hit me, It’e Kendel Carson. I met her in Nashville when she was doing work with Chip Taylor. This is a Canadian band Belle Starr, a band Carson is now a member of, along with Stephanie Cadman & Miranda Mulholland, covering a fellow Canadian Fred Eaglesmith.

Hayes Carll

David Onley & Sergio Webb – House Concert – San Francisco, CA – 10/5/10

I’ve heard about house concerts, intimate performances, usually acoustic performed for a limited number of people at someones residence, but until now had never had the opportunity to attend one. Then on Monday morning I received a tweet (a message on twitter for the uninitiated) from David Olney, who along with his side man Sergio Webb had recently played the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival, would be performing a house party. Olney and his side man Sergio Webb had recently played the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival. I emailed the organizer (for whom this was a first-time endeavor) and I was in.

As instructed by the email I received from the organizer I arrived at 7 PM at the a high-end apartment building in the tony Ashbury Heights section of the city. I paid the $15. “donation” (one reason they like these gigs is that often 100% of the entrance fee goes to the performers) the small crowd milled in the make-do bar and buffet eating crackers and cheese and drinking wine and beer. After some conversations I surmised that I was probably the only one there that didn’t have a direct association with the host or the performers. I was the only outsider. Being a Texan in San Francisco, I was comfortable in this role.

Olney and his side-kick guitarist/singer Sergio Webb, set up in the living room in front of a large bay window, a grand piano (unused at this performance) and flanked by what I can only assume were large oil paintings of the relatives. Davis Olney is an artist whose name you might not recognize, but you would recognize the people who’ve worked with him or covered his songs – Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Del McCoury, Lonnie Brooks, Steve Earle, Slaid Cleaves, Dale Ann Bradley, Tom Rozum, Ann Rabson, Keiran Kane/Kevin Welch/Fats Kaplin and others.  An old friend, Townes Vant Zandt, when asked who his favorite music writers are stated “Mozart, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Bob Dylan, and David Olney.” Onley is the most famous men you’ve never heard of.

Decked in a formal Nudie-style Western jacket, dark fedora and coolly playing his ‘44 Gibson hollow body Olney cuts a dapper figure. Sergio Webb is his unkempt opposite in a wide-brimmed straw cowboy hat and think, braided beard, western shirt with playing cards embroidered on summons rockabilly heat and pedal-steel sounds from his vintage Telecaster.

Relying on no set list Olney channeled performers from the past, sprinkling dark and wry early 2oth-century  America tales with humorous anecdotes and self-depreciating asides like “These guys are great, how come i don’t know about them?!” Using a mashup of rock/blues/folk/country as a framework appearances were made by John Dillinger (Dillinger),  “Dizzy” Dean
(Heaven’s Game), Socrates (Sweet Poison) and the subject of Johannes Vermeer’s “The Girl with a Pearl Earring” (Mister Vermeer.) A few covers were added (“We’re not a cover band, really.” stated Olney after their third.)  With all their 70’s gaudiness I now realize how great a band the Bee Gees since hearing Olney’s cover of their New York Mining Disaster 1941 (the miners’ isolation given added poignancy from an experience Onley had a year in a New York City jail cell.) There was also a heartfelt rendition of Townes Van Zandt’s Snowin On Raton Lyrics

Besides providing musicians a new channel to make a few bucks between gigs on the road house concerts are attended by people are there to see the music instead of to be seen or to yammer. The audience watched the intimate show attentively and reacted passionately at a clever phrase by Olney or an especially hot solo by Sergio Webb. All in all I think for the kind of music I love I think house concerts are something I’m going to seek out more often.

11th Annual Americana Music Association Conference/Festival Must Sees

In this economy we all gave to pick and choose where our money goes, so for the first time in three years I’m skipping the Americana Festival and Conference.  Though I have aired my issues with the panels in the conference there is no doubt that the music and venues that host them are stellar and get better each year. If I were in Nashville for the event here’s what would be on my to-do list.

First the touristy must see places: See the Ryman Green Room AKA Tootsies Orchid Lounge where legends have played and drank. Drool over rows of gear at Gruhn Guitars. See where the Ryan and countless other have their event posters hand printed at  Hatch Show Print. See the Country Music Hall of Fame, host a cold local brew at Big River Brewery and try the brisket sweet tea at Jack’s Barbecue. And these are all withing walking distance of the Convention Center where the conference is taking place.

There are so many great acts that Wednesday night is already tough call, but here goes – I would start out my night at The Basement to catch Hayes Carll at 8pm. Why someone of Hayes caliber is on as the opening act on the bill I have no idea, but it’s sure to be a great one. 9pm has me torn, I know  Elizabeth Cook will put on a great show at The Station Inn and showcase songs off her excellent Don Was produced new release Welder. Ray Wylie Hubbard is on opposite her at the Mercy Lounge and , well, Ray Wylie is a Texas legend. And I never forgo a chance to sing Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother. Plus he and Hayes Carll are buddies so there’s a chance Hayes will head over to the Mercy after his gig at The Basement to sit in for a closing rendition of the Americana Award nominated song of the year Drunken Poet’s Dream. Advantage Ray Wylie. At 10:30 head downstairs to the Cannery Ballroom to see the Exile on Main Street Tribute featuring performances by Dan Baird, Warner Hodges, Mike Farris, Jesse Dayton, Grace Potter, Jimmy Hall, Paul Thorn & more. If you do find yourself at the Station Inn to catch Ms. Cook, stay for the 11pm performance of another Texas legend – Guy Clark.

Thursday evening  is the Americana Awards show at the Ryman – you can’t  miss this. Not only do you get the privilege of sitting in the pews of the Mother Church of Country Music, the performances are extraordinary  and there is always a surprise or two. After an evening in church it’ll be time for a little sin.  If you like your country cut with a healthy dose of punk you’ll want to be at  The Basement to catch the 11pm peformance of X/The Knitters singer Exene Cervenka and Mekons/ Waco Brothers singer-guitarist Jon Langford. Toronto, Canada’s The Beauties opens the show at 10. The excellent Mary Gauthier will perform at the Station Inn at 11pm. For curiosities sake you might want to stick around after her show to see John Oats (the shorter, darker half of  Hall & Oats) do a Bluegrass version of Maneater. The Rutledge is a new addition to venues this year and on Thursday you could settle in for three great performers – David Olney at 10pm, Tommy Emmanuel at 11pm and Will Kimbrough at 12am. As tempting as these previous bills are I would have to settle into the Mercy Lounge to catch another Texas legend (seeing a theme from this Dallas native?) Dale Watson do his unique version of honky-tonk gems. After Dale is a treat – she was billed the “female Elvis” and even opned for The King on one of his tours. Wanda Jackson will perform and she might have a special guest – the producer of her forthcoming studio album, and Nashville resident, Jack White.

Friday night I would start off the night with the hillbilly beat-poetry of Minton Sparks at the Basement.The rest of the evening is sold as well – Todd Thibaud (9pm), Chip Taylor (10pm), who might be joined by one of his prodigies – Carrie Rodriguez or Kendel Carson, Peter Case (11pm) and Otis Gibbs (12am) Or you could head over to the Mercy Lounge see songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and Band of Joy member Darrell Scott show why he’s the only singer that could steal the spotlight from Robert Plant. .After Scott settle in for a great show by Jim Lauderdale (10pm) and Shelby Lynne (11pm), who might just have her recent duo partner Peter Wolf sit in for a song or two, and Langhorne Slim (12am.) If you haven’t see his you need to head over the The Rutledge at 10pm to catch the legendary Charlie Louvin, . There’s no telling who’ll show up for a chance to share the stage with this man.

Okay, so it’s Saturday and if you have any endurance (and liver) left head over the The Basement for the sweet sounds of the Sweetback Sisters (8pm) the over to the Rutledge for the hot sounds of Peter Karp & Sue Foley (9pm.) After Karp & Foley is John Carter Cash. With half-sister Rosanne in town and his recent release of Carter Family III there is potential for some great moments. The Cannery Ballroom features the blue-eyes soul of Mike Ferris (9pm) who has blown me away every time I see him.  After Ferris is Todd Snider’s Rock and Roll review featuring Jason D. Williams, Dan Baird and Friends (10pm) This will be a great end to what is sure to be a great festival.

This is the way I’d plan it, but truth be told I usually fly by the seat of my pants and see where the night takes me. It doesn’t musch mater where you go on these nights, you’re bound to see some great music. If you get to Nashville sooner than the 8th you have to check out the The Doyle And Debbie Show at the Station In on the 7th.

Anyway, have fun, spend money (the city needs to pay for flooding repairs), be safe and leave things the way you found them.

News Round Up: Kris Kristofferson Releases Early Demo Compilation

Kris Kristofferson’s latest is actually some of his earliest. Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends: The Publishing Demos 1968-72 is a collection of raw demos made to shop his songs around to singers while sweeping floors at Columbia Studios in Nashville (where he later first met Johnny Cash.) I listened to 16 cuts from the album streaming over at NPR and it’s a beauty. The back and forth with Kristofferson and the recording engineer does not take away from the artistry from this master songwriter. There are classics like Me and Bobby McGee,made famous by a woman that dated Kristofferson for a time, Janis Joplin. There is also the title cut which was recorded by Bobby Bare and If You Don’t Like Hank Williams latter recorded by Hank Williams Jr. With Willie and Merle Haggard coming out with releases this month Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends just makes this one of the best bumper crops in quite some time. The down-loadable version is on sale now at Amazon.

News Round Up: New Releases by John Prine, Johnny Cash Art Collective

  • In true DIY fashion The Johnny Cash Project is a “global collective art project” that allows fans from all over the world to contribute to a arrogated, user-generated video for the title track from the latest Johnny Cash recording American VI: Ain’t No Grave. The single images are then threaded together into a one-of-a-kind labor of love. I only wish the Man in Black has lived to see this.
  • John Prine fans are about to hit pay-dirt. On May 25th, 2010, Oh Boy Records (founded in 1981 by Prine and manager Al Bunetta) will release the live In Person & On Stage, which will draw from performances spanning the past several years and covering songs from as far back as Prine’s 1971 debut and as recently as 2005’s acclaimed Fair & Square. Then Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine will be released on on June 22nd (Oh Boy) and will feature Prine compositions interpreted by devotees such as My Morning Jacket, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, The Avett Brothers, Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Lambchop, Drive-By Truckers, Deer Tick featuring Liz Isenberg, Justin Townes Earle, Those Darlins, and, reprising their respective tracks from In Person & On Stage, Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins and Josh Ritter. Oh Boy will begin a pre-sale for In Person & On Stage on April 20thand for Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows on April 27th at www.musicfansdirect.com.
  • The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum has announced it will pay tribute to the legendary Tammy Wynette with an exhibit titled Tammy Wynette: First Lady of Country Music. Presented by Great American Country (GAC) the exhibit will open in the Museum’s East Gallery on August 20, 2010, and run through June 2011.
  • More news from the The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. An upgrade to the Hall’s core collection, Sing Me Back Home: A Journey Through Country Music, are expected to be completed next month. The updates, which focus on country music’s last five decades, will bring the story of country music forward in time and conclude with a glimpse of the future. They will highlight the country-rock, pop-country, southern rock, full-strength classic country and the “Urban Cowboy” craze. The upgrade includes new oversized portraits, video clips and artifacts such as Dolly Parton’s handwritten lyrics to Jolene, Tom T. Hall’s acoustic guitar he purchased from songwriter Merle Kilgore, and items from Ronnie Milsap, Kenny Rogers, Mel Tillis, and Tanya Tucker. Other updates focus on the mid-1980s arrival of artists like Dwight Yoakam, Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, Randy Travis and Steve Earle. New exhibits celebrate contemporary bluegrass and Americana artists, ranging from Alison Krauss and Del McCoury to Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale.

Billy Joe Shaver Acquitted of 2007 Shooting

In a case that will go down in Country Music Outlaw history, a Waco, Texas jury has acquitted 70-year-old Texas Country Music Hall of Fame member Billy Joe Shaver of aggravated assault in the shooting of a man outside a Lorena, Texas bar in 2007. the incident came after Shaver had played a show.Willie Nelson and actor Robert Duvall had been at the trial to show their friend moral support.

My favorite parts of  the released testimony were: during cross examination by the prosecuting attorney Shaver was asked if he might have pulled a gun on Billy Coker in the bar’s parking lot because  Coker (who had first allegedly pulled a knife to which Shaver pulled a gun from his truck and famously asked him “Where do you want it?” ) was talking to talking to Shaver’s wife, Wanda, Shaver said “I get more women than a passenger train can haul. I’m not jealous.”  When asked why he didn’t leave the bar without his wife after realizing his argument with Coker was escalating. Shaver replied, “Ma’am, I’m from Texas. If I were chickenshit, I would have left, but I’m not.” Classic.

Texas singer/songwriter wrote a song entitled “Where do you want it?” shortly after the incident.
